A first-term congressman from Texas is trying to halt President Obama’s plan to resettle tens of thousands of Middle East refugees, forcing Obama to wait until the costs and risks can be assessed.

“This is going to be an open door for ISIS to set up the base of operation inside the United States at taxpayer expense and legally,” said Rep. Brian Babin Monday on “The Laura Ingraham Show.”

The Obama administration announced last month that the United States would increase from 70,000 the annual number of refugees settled in the United States. The administration plans to take at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the current fiscal year. The number of resettled refugees would rise to 100,000 in 2017, mainly to accommodate people fleeing Syria.

“This is insanity to open up the borders of our country and invite turmoil and the problems of the Middle East to the United States,” Babin said. “I’m doing my duty. As a veteran myself, we have got to make sure that the national security of our people of the United States of America is kept intact.”

The plan has drawn particular concern from local officials who say their communities cannot accommodate large numbers of refugees and from security experts who question whether screening procedures are adequate to ensure that terrorists do not slip into the country.

Babin admitted that he faces long odds getting his bill passed. So far, it has only 22 co-sponsors.

“But there needs to be far more,” he said. “The leadership of the House has got to get on this.”

Anni Cyrus, who was raised under Sharia law in Iran, said during a separate appearance on “The Laura Ingraham Show” that the refugee plan jeopardizes American security.

“It’s terrifying … That’s a huge number to terrorize our country and turn us back and turn us into another Islamic country,” she said.
