Babin Meets with NASA Astronaut Scott Kelly Following His Historic Year-Long Space Mission
As the House Space Subcommittee Chairman and U.S. Representative of NASA’s Johnson Space Center, I met with Astronaut Scott Kelly on Friday to discuss his year-long mission on the International Space Station (ISS). Kelly, who just announced his retirement from the NASA Astronaut Corp., is a veteran of four space flights and has spent more time in space than any other U.S. Astronaut.
During his year-long ISS expedition mission, Kelly conducted many health and life science research experiments, using his twin brother, former astronaut Mark Kelly, as a baseline so that researchers could better understand the impacts of long-duration spaceflight on the human body. By further understanding and mitigating these health risks, it will help enable deeper space missions - including a trip to Mars. Congratulations to Commander Kelly on his successful mission and his decades of dedicated service to our country as an Astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain. I wish him the best in his retirement.
Remembering a True American Hero
We lost a great American this past week with the passing of Raymond Ellis Hopson of Jasper, Texas. Last November, I had the special privilege and honor of presenting Mr. Hopson with his Bronze Star of Valor for his heroic service in WWII, which until then had never been officially awarded to him.
I'm glad that our office was able to help ensure he finally received this honor despite being 73 years late. Mr. Hopson was a true American hero. I am truly grateful to have met him and had the opportunity to thank him for his service. May God bless him and his entire family.
