House Votes to Dismantle Obamacare Through Reconciliation Process
|
|
On Friday, we passed H.R. 3762 in the House to dismantle Obamacare through the repeal of the Individual and Employer Mandate, the Cadillac Tax, the Medical Device Tax, and the Prevention and Public Health Fund (Obamacare Slush Fund). This bill uses what is called the "budget reconciliation process" -- and while it is not as comprehensive as the legislation we passed in January -- it only requires a simple majority in the Senate to get to the President’s desk. It also enjoys the support of more than 40 groups, including the Family Research Council, National Right to Life, National Taxpayers Union, National Retail Federation, Liberty Council Action, and Citizens Against Government Waste.

Babin Introduces Bill to Hold ATF Accountable and Strengthen Ammo Manufacturing
— Endorsed by NRA, NSSF and GOA — |
Over the past three and a half years, the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has failed to respond in a reasonable and timely manner to requests from ammunition manufacturers who are seeking waivers to produce alternative rifle ammunition for the hunting market made with brass instead of lead or copper. This has created considerable uncertainty for ammunition manufacturers and gun owners alike.
In response, I've introduced the Alternative Ammunition Manufacturing Act (H.R. 3802), which requires the ATF to issue a ruling within 60 days of receiving a waiver application, or else the application will be automatically granted. Our bill, which is endorsed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), National Rifle Association (NRA), and Gun Owners of America (GOA), will hold the ATF accountable for their inaction by requiring a timely and detailed response to all waiver requests.

| Babin Votes to Ensure Debt is Paid and Social Security is Protected |
On Wednesday, the House passed the Default Prevention Act, which instructs the U.S. Treasury to meet certain pressing financial commitments should the federal debt limit be reached. By prioritizing our financial obligations, the Default Prevention Act will take away the threat of a default and ensure Social Security benefits are paid in full and on time regardless of the outcome of the debt ceiling debate.
This will provide much-needed certainty to seniors and make sure the focus remains on addressing Washington’s out-of-control spending problem. With a $19 trillion national debt, we simply cannot afford to provide this Administration with another blank check to go on another spending spree. It’s absolutely critical that we use this opportunity to pass meaningful reforms that cut wasteful spending and put America back on a sustainable fiscal path.

| President Obama Vetoes Bipartisan Defense Bill in Staged Photo-Op |
|
This past week marked a new low for President Obama. In a shameful gesture to our service members, the President staged a “photo-op” to boast about his veto of a strong bipartisan defense bill that provides equipment, training and pay for our troops and their families. Sadly, this is all being done not because the President objects to the funding levels for our military, but rather because of his unrelated efforts to increase funding for unaccountable government agencies like the IRS and EPA. As a veteran myself and the father of a decorated Navy SEAL, it is my sincere hope that the House and Senate will come together in a strong fashion to override the President's foolish and dangerous veto.
