Congressional Art Competition Awards
- Students from Crosby, Warren and Lumberton High Schools Receive Top Honors - |
On Saturday, April 30th, our Congressional Office hosted an awards ceremony at the University of Houston – Clear Lake to announce the winners and honor those who participated in the 36th Congressional District’s 2016 Congressional Art Competition. My staff and I were truly impressed by the incredible artwork displayed by our young folks across the 36th District of Texas. With over 75 submissions perfectly fitting this year’s theme of ‘The Great Outdoors of TX- 36,’ we couldn’t have asked for a more exciting and outstanding group of artwork.

First Place: Skylar Thomas | Crosby High School | "Into the Woods" |
We were proud to present this year's first place award to Skylar Thomas of Crosby High School for her artwork, “Into the Woods,” which will now be displayed in the U.S. Capitol's Cannon Tunnel for an entire year. Skylar will also receive two round-trip tickets to Washington, DC, compliments of Southwest Airlines, to attend the national Congressional Art Competition ceremony in June.

Second Place: Savannah Smith | Warren High School | "Serenity of Home" |
Second place was presented to Savannah Smith of Warren High School for her artwork “Serenity of Home” while third place went to Autumn Welch of Lumberton High School for her artwork “The Dock.” Both will be displayed in Congressman Babin’s office in Washington, D.C. I offer my congratulations to this year’s first place winner, Skylar Thomas, and all those who took time to participate. We will be represented proudly in the U.S. Capitol and in our Washington, DC office. To view pictures from the awards ceremony, please click here.

| Exposing Obama's $8 Million Handover to Iran's Nuclear Program |
The Obama Administration’s foolish nuclear deal with Iran continues to get more troubling and damaging by the day. We recently found out that the Administration was spending $8.6 million of your hard earned tax dollars to buy nuclear material from Iran. That’s right – the U.S. government is borrowing money from China and the rest of the world to buy heavy water from Iran, which is used in nuclear reactors. I thought the goal of Obama’s nuclear deal was to stop Iran’s nuclear program – not subsidize it! I took to the House floor to urge my colleagues to join me in the coming months to fully defund this insane nuclear deal.

| American Energy Will Help Create a Better Tomorrow |
For the past several years, Texas has led the nation in job creation – setting the standard for how American ingenuity, limited government and hard work lead to a stronger economy. With the U.S. perfecting and deploying new drilling technologies, the availability of cheap natural gas has been a driver of new economic growth around the country. However, the “do-gooders” in Washington are taking steps to undermine this success. Under this Administration, the radical environmentalists are winning again as the American worker gets left behind. It's time for Washington elites to stop standing in the way so that American innovators and workers can pursue their dreams while building a stronger and more secure economic future for themselves and their children. Snap-shots from the Week
|
I had the very special privilege of meeting with some of our Houston-area WWII veterans during their visit to Washington, DC as part of Honor Flight Houston. The Honor Flight Network transports our nation's oldest veterans to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. It was an honor to meet these true American heroes and thank them for their service. They continue to represent the best America has to offer. I'm always humbled and thankful for the opportunity to be in their presence. To view more pictures, please click here.
I recently joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to highlight the importance of a joint effort being led by chemical manufacturers and labor leaders that seeks to ensure American workers are properly trained to meet the growing demand of manufacturing jobs. There are nearly 150 petrochemical factories in the 36th District of Texas. Being certified and trained to work at one of our chemical plants can mean a six-figure salary just a few years out of high school. As someone who worked in a chemical factory right out of high school in Beaumont, I understand the importance of helping make sure American workers are ready to fill these good-paying, high skilled jobs.

| 65th Annual National Day of Prayer |
Thursday marked the 65th Annual National Day of Prayer. Since the first call to prayer in 1775, when the Continental Congress asked the colonies to pray for wisdom in forming a nation, the call to prayer has continued through our history. This year’s theme – Wake Up America – couldn’t be more important. At such a critical time in our nation’s history, we can do nothing more important than pray. I hope each of you had an opportunity to pray for our nation, our elected leaders and the future of our great country. I also humbly ask for your prayers as I seek to serve you with integrity in Congress.
