Babin Votes to Fund Border Wall, Rebuild Military and Increase Funding for Veterans
This week, the House passed H.R. 3219, the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, legislation that fully funds President Trump’s request for a wall along our southern border. The Make America Secure Appropriations Act puts America on a stronger and more secure path forward that rebuilds our military, secures our southern border and prioritizes funding for our troops, veterans and their families. Importantly, it fully funds President Trump’s border wall, gives our troops the largest pay raise in eight years and provides the highest level of funding ever for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). I am proud to support this legislation and deliver on our constitutional duty to uphold the security of our nation and ensure the safety of America’s citizens at home and abroad.

The Make America Secure Appropriations Act:

✔ Fully funds President Trump’s FY2018 $1.6 billion request for a wall along our southern border.
✔ Gives our troops a much-deserved pay raise—the largest military pay raise in eight years.
✔ Rebuilds our military with a substantial increase for the Department of Defense.
✔ Pays for updated equipment and weapons so that our men and women serving abroad are fully equipped and prepared for warfare.
✔ Takes care of our veterans by providing the highest level of funding—ever—for the Veterans Affairs Department.
Babin: Military Needs to Be Focused on National Defense
The President’s announcement on transgenders in the military is common sense. The military needs to be focused on national defense. It is not a place for social engineering. Furthermore, taxpayer funds should not be used for sex re-assignment surgeries in the military. These funds are intended to defend our nation, and equip and train our troops – not cover sex changes.

House Passes Bill to Expand GI Bill Benefits
This week, I was proud to support the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, which will improve and expand the GI bill’s education benefits for veterans, their spouses and dependents. From now on, new service members will be able to use the GI bill’s education benefits throughout their lifetimes, as opposed to the current 15-year timeline. Our bill will also allow veterans to take advantage of non-traditional technology courses and give full GI bill eligibility to all post-9/11 Purple Heart recipients. These reforms mark an important improvement in ensuring those who honorably serve our country receive the support, education and training they need to transition from active duty to civilian life.
