- Legislative Update -
Babin Votes to Extend National Flood Insurance Program Through Hurricane Season
This week, I voted for the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act of 2018 (S.1182), legislation that will keep the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) authorized through the upcoming hurricane season.

I represent working coastal communities that were hit very hard by Hurricane Harvey – communities that are vital to our nation’s energy security. Coastal energy and petrochemical refining facilities like those I represent in TX-36 cannot function without a steady and reliable workforce, and that workforce cannot exist without a stable housing market. I am grateful that my House colleagues saw the need to reauthorize this vital program, and I look forward to continuing our effort to reform the NFIP before it expires toward the end of the year.

Lowering Health Care Costs

Congress recently advanced important legislation that will improve health care for hardworking Americans. I voted for the Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2018 (H.R. 184), which repealed Obamacare’s harmful medical device tax, a mandate that has been driving up the cost of life-saving medical equipment and killing innovation and jobs. This action will help to lower costs for American families, and make way for more jobs and greater advances in medical research.

I also voted for the Restoring Access to Medication and Modernizing Health Savings Accounts Act of 2018 (H.R. 6199). This bill expands the flexibility of health savings accounts (HSAs), allows for other health-related savings and spending accounts to be converted to HSAs, repeals restrictions Obamacare placed on the purchasing of over-the-counter medications with HSAs, and allows for certain qualified sports and fitness expenses to be treated as qualified medical expenses.

While there is clearly more work to be done, I was proud to be a part of the work this week help lower the cost of health care and medicines for Americans, and provide relief from some of Obamacare's crushing taxes and mandates.

Meeting with Energy Secretary Rick Perry

I had a positive visit this week with my friend Rick Perry, former governor and now Department of Energy Secretary. We discussed the proposed Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany, which is contrary to the security of our NATO allies. We also spoke of the potential for markets in Texas and throughout the U.S. to supply liquid natural gas (LNG) to our European allies so they would not be dependent on Russian gas. This would benefit many Texas and American producers.

Op-Ed: Houston's Johnson Space Center is Still the Undisputed Leader in Human Space Flight
"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” U.S. Astronaut, Neil Armstrong, spoke these historic words when America achieved the nearly impossible feat of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely home by 1970. I am proud to represent JSC, and will do everything in my power to make sure that when we again land Americans on the Moon, then Mars, and beyond, the first word from that surface will always be, “Houston…”

Snap-Shots from the Week
It was a pleasure to meet with  LaPorte and Pasadena-area constituents, who were in Washington with Christians United for Israel.

My Deer Park office presented 96 year-old Anna "Andy" Louise Richards Koenning (pictured, with her daughters) with a flag and an official Congressional Record of Recognition honoring her service as a Lieutenant Junior Grade World War II veteran. Andy also shared her remarkable experiences in an interview with my office as part of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project. To watch her interview, click here

The Anstead family came by my office for a Capitol tour while they were visiting Washington, D.C. It is always great to catch up with constituents, so please let us know if you are coming to town!
