| Paying Tribute to WWII Veteran Charles Saunders |
As we paused to reflect on the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor last Tuesday, I took time to highlight someone special – Southeast Texas native and U.S. Navy Seaman Charles Saunders.
Seaman Saunders was aboard the USS Oklahoma on the morning of December 7, 1941. Tragically, the Oklahoma sustained 429 casualties that fateful day, including Charles Saunders.
After 80 long years, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency finally identified Seaman Saunders’ remains. On Tuesday, he was reinterred alongside his parents, with full military honors, in his hometown of Winne, Texas.
It was a true privilege to help bring this American hero home and pay tribute to him on the House floor.
