Applauding Trump on NAFTA Deal

I applaud President Trump for delivering on his campaign promise to strike a new deal with Mexico and Canada – a feat many claimed impossible. The 36th Congressional District is a hub of international trade and is the second largest exporter in the State of Texas. Though I have long had concerns with certain provisions of NAFTA, with trade such a vital part of our economy, it is imperative any trade deal does not significantly disrupt existing economic sectors and fulfills the President’s promise to reform the deal in the best interests of working Americans.

Congress now must review and vote on USMCA, and I pledge to carefully evaluate this deal before the vote to ensure it is good for Texas and America. I also want to seize this opportunity to resolve the Loadmaster issue and ensure a fair resolution by PEMEX and the Mexican government. President Trump’s policies have spurred our economy to its best performance in decades, but we are not finished yet. I look forward to continue working with the President for the benefit of the people of Texas.

Updating the Woodville Rotary Club

On Wednesday, I was able to attend the weekly Rotary Club meeting in Woodville where I gave its members an update from Washington. We discussed the crucial need to secure our nation's borders and fix the broken immigration system that has let our country down for decades. The safety of American citizens must be put first as we continue our journey back to greatness. Now that our economy is flourishing and our military is being rebuilt to be stronger than ever before, I think we are well on our way!

In Case You Missed It

The House voted last week to make tax cuts permanent, a move an analysis from Congress' Joint Economic Committee says will provide the most benefit to low- and middle-income earners. I was proud to vote for this legislation to help Americans keep more of their hard-earned money on a lasting scale.

Visiting at the Pasadena Rodeo
What a treat making new friends at the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo last weekend.
I met the winners of the 30th Annual Beauty Pageant Competition: (L to R) Young Miss Pasadena Rodeo Laela Salazar, Jr. Miss Pasadena Rodeo Ashlynn Cooper, Teen Miss Pasadena Rodeo Ariel Chamberlain, and Miss Pasadena Rodeo Bethany Mills.

A highlight was meeting World War II veteran Mario Saladino and his daughters Gena Saladino Dowell, Denise Saladino Michalak, and Carrie Saladino McBroom (all pictured above). My father also served in the second World War, and I am so thankful for the great men and women and their families who sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms.

Meador Staffing Services' 50th Anniversary
I had the honor of attending Meador Staffing Services' 50th Anniversary Luncheon on Thursday in Pasadena. I enjoyed visiting with many of my fellow Texans as we joined together to celebrate this fantastic milestone.
Ben F. Meador, Jr. (pictured below with his wife Janice) has given so much to his community and the good citizens of Pasadena for half of a century, and it was my privilege to present him with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his selfless service.

NASA Celebrates 60 Years
This week, NASA celebrated their 60th Anniversary on October 1! The magnitude of the contributions of the hundreds of thousands who have participated in NASA’s successes—and the tremendous economic benefits resulting from the science, research, operations, and technological advancement—is immeasurable. NASA’s historical achievements have inspired generations and positioned the United States as the undisputed leader in space, and I look forward to continuing my work in Congress to support and advance NASA’s mission.

One way I am advancing this important agenda is by the Leading Human Spaceflight Act (H.R. 6910), a bill I introduced last week to extend the life of the International Space Station (ISS), among other significant provisions for Johnson Space Center.

The 7th Annual Washington A Man of Prayer Ceremony
Washington A Man of Prayer is a ceremony that celebrates the inaugural of our first President, George Washington, and the first act of the First Congress.

On April 30, 1789, after being sworn in on the steps of Federal Hall in New York City, the new President, the Supreme Court, and Congress proceeded a few blocks to Saint Paul’s Chapel. This is the little chapel that miraculously survived unscathed during the 9/11 attacks, even though it is positioned between the Twin Towers.

While in session, they offered dedicatory prayers for the new Republic in Divine Services.
I, along with many of my House colleagues, had the opportunity to pray over the nation at this ceremony last week.
