House Unanimously Passes Congressman Babin’s TREAT Astronauts Act
I'm very pleased to report that the U.S. House of Representatives on December 7th unanimously approved my bill, the To Research, Evaluate, Assess, and Treat Astronauts Act (H.R. 6076), or “TREAT” Astronauts Act. This bipartisan legislation authorizes NASA to provide former astronauts medical monitoring, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological and medical conditions associated with their space flight. This is an important step in preparing current and future astronauts for longer-term spaceflight.
As a nation we have obligations to those we have put in harm’s way and Congress has a responsibility to provide for the treatment of conditions caused by their federal service. As a health care professional and as the representative of a great number of these astronauts who call the Houston area home, I am proud to lead this common sense, fiscally responsible effort that makes sure our brave men and woman that venture into space receive support for medical issues associated with their service.

President-elect Donald Trump Names Governor Rick Perry as Energy Secretary
Congratulations to Governor Rick Perry on being selected to serve as the Secretary of Energy by President-elect Trump. Having known Gov. Perry for many years, I can think of no finer, more capable person for this very important job. His experience and success leading Texas—one of the world’s largest economies—will be a tremendous benefit to President-elect Trump and his efforts to make America energy independent and create millions of new jobs by fully unleashing our energy potential.

This year the National Park Service (NPS) turned 100 years old. In honor of this anniversary, our Regional Director of Community Relations Rachel Iglesias joined together with State Rep James White and the staff at Big Thicket National Preserve for a ceremonial planting of the 100,000 longleaf pine trees in the 2016 Centennial Forest. I was also pleased to recently join the House in unanimously passing the NPS Centennial Act (H.R. 4680), which will help equip the NPS for a second century of promoting our nation’s parks.
