Historic Flooding in Southeast Texas
 Community Pulls Together During Crisis

Our hearts and prayers go out to all those who have been impacted by the devastating flooding across Southeast Texas. My staff and I have been in close contact with emergency response officials in Jasper, Newton and Orange counties. During the recovery effort, we will continue to do all that we can to be a resource to first responders. To receive updated information on shelters, road closures, safety tips and other useful information, please visit our flood resources webpage here.

Our congressional office has been working closely with the Governor's office as they gather the necessary data needed to request a federal disaster declaration. Once a federal disaster has been declared, our staff will be able to assist constituents with FEMA disaster assistance claims. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any assistance. We are ready to help each step of the way during this difficult road ahead.

Officials at the Orange County Emergency Operations Center brief Rep. Babin's Regional Director, Lanie Brown, on the response effort.
We are deeply grateful for the Texas Game Wardens and all of our first responders for their tremendous response effort to the flooding. They have gone above and beyond to serve their neighbors during this time of crisis. The lack of casualties is a direct result of their incredible and immediate response to the rising flood waters.

Babin Joins House in Urging Supreme Court to Strike Down Obama’s Executive Amnesty
The House voted this week to allow the Speaker of the House to file an amicus brief in the upcoming Supreme Court case United States v. Texas, which questions the constitutionality of Obama’s executive actions on immigration. This is a historic and much-needed step to stop President Obama’s unlawful and unconstitutional executive actions on immigration. The President’s decision to grant amnesty through executive action makes a mockery of our laws and the U.S. Constitution. This resolution makes clear that the majority of the House believes the President’s actions are a gross overreach of executive authority – and must be struck down by the Supreme Court.
Babin Responds to Obama's Supreme Court Justice Nomination
I am strongly opposed to allowing President Obama the opportunity to nominate a new Supreme Court Justice in his final few months. It's been over 80 years since a new Supreme Court Justice was nominated and confirmed in a presidential election year. We are in the midst of one of the most important elections of our lifetimes. We should let the American people speak at the ballot box before we hand another liberal Justice a lifetime position on the highest court in the land. The stakes are simply too high to do otherwise. In fact, in 1992, then-Senator Joe Biden made clear that the Senate should not consider an election year Justice nomination. Furthermore, in 2006, then-Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and John Kerry voted to filibuster and deny President Bush’s nominee an up-or-down vote. Simply put, the Senate has a Constitutionally protected right to deny the nomination of any Justice put forth by the President. To say otherwise, is purely false.
Orange District Office Closed Due to Flooding
Due to flooding, we have been forced to evacuate our Orange District Office. The Office of State Rep. Dade Phelan has graciously offered us space at their district office (11867 Hwy. 62 N). During this time, we can still be reached at (409) 883-8075, and will continue helping every way we can.

Pictures from the Response Effort
Rachel Iglesias, our Regional Director for Jasper and Newton counties, receives an overview of the response efforts at the Emergency Command Center in Jasper.
The Newton Volunteer Fire Department is collecting donations for flood victims. I couldn't be more proud of how our communities have pulled together to help each other during these difficult times. That’s what it’s all about in East Texas. Pictured here from left to right is  Kimberly Bailey, Mary Coker, April Coker and Janice Godeaux.
The First Baptist Church in Kirbyville is providing emergency shelter to flood victims. Our sincerest thanks to Pastor Charles Burchet, Jerry Lawrence, Dewayne Shultz, and all the volunteers for helping those displaced by the devastating flooding.
