Dear Friend, I recently met with top Congressional homeland security members, and according to them, they have not seen the national security threats this high as they are today in quite some time. Sadly, we have seen an unprecedented decline in the national security and safety of the American homeland under the current Administration. We need a strategy to defeat ISIS and to restore our military and American leadership around the world. House Republicans have put forth a plan that centers on protecting the homeland by keeping terrorists out of America, securing our borders, closing the security gaps in our refugee program and stopping cyber attacks. I've been extremely vocal about the vulnerabilities we face as a nation, particularly from the United Nation’s run refugee resettlement program. We’ve already been told by Obama’s own DHS and FBI Directors that they cannot properly vet certain refugees coming from the Middle East. And we’ve already seen the deadly consequence of a flawed refugee process in Europe – where terrorists have infiltrated and killed hundreds of innocent civilians and continue to plot more attacks. The U.S. must learn from Europe’s mistakes -- not repeat them here. To that end, I introduced H.R. 3314 which puts an immediate moratorium on refugees from Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq until Congress approves new screening procedures. This authority would sunset after four years – and could only be restarted if Congress approved an extension. This gives Congress time to review the program, its implementation and whether it has been effective in protecting the American people. Ending this refugee program that is on automatic and without limits must end. It also requires a full assessment of the costs of refugees to federal, state and local governments – which we know is in the billions. As elected officials, we have a sworn duty to protect the American people. And it’s time we start putting the safety of our citizens first. The House Republican’s have a better way of making America more safe and secure. We must defeat radical Islamist terrorists that threaten our safety and security and take the fight to our enemies by leading the world in decisive action against them. This requires a strong and robust military force. Our plan calls for providing our military with the resources they need to get the job done. America is the greatest defender of liberty, but under the Obama Administration’s policy of leading from behind this image and reality has been recklessly eroded. The President’s worldwide “apology tour” did nothing but embolden the enemies of the American people and freedom. I am working hard with my conservative colleagues to see America win the fight against radical Islamist terrorism, to ensure that American citizens are kept safe and to restore American influence in the world.
