Dear Friend, Advancing pro-life policies in Washington is a priority for me. In fact, as a new Member of Congress one of the first bills that I cosponsored was H.R. 7 (No Taxpayer for Abortion), which passed the House in January. As a cosponsor of nearly a dozen pro-life initiatives, the recent revelations about Planned Parenthood centers across the nation come as little surprise to those of us actively engaged in ending taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. This strengthens our resolve to terminate every taxpayer penny that flows to Planned Parenthood. The Center for Medical Progress has released close to a dozen videos showing senior Planned Parenthood officials, former employees, and a tissue procurement company discussing the buying and selling of unborn babies and unborn baby body organs. This is indefensible. Nearly 40 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue last year came from taxpayers. They received more than $1.2 billion in taxpayer funds through Medicaid over the past three years. I have joined with like-minded Members of Congress to stop the flow of tax-dollars from hardworking Americans to Planned Parenthood. This legislation will: • Immediately Ban Funding for Planned Parenthood – H.R. 3134, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, immediately halts all Federal funding to Planned Parenthood. • Permanently Ban Funding to All Abortion Providers – H.R. 3197, the Protecting Life and Taxpayers Act, permanently defunds any entity that provides abortions or funds any other organization that performs abortions (i.e., Planned Parenthood). • Strengthen Our Laws Against the Sale of Body Parts from Unborn Babies - H.R. 3429, the PRO-LIFE Act, strengthens our laws against the sale or exchange of anything of value for organs from aborted babies. • Appoint an Independent Counsel to Investigate Planned Parenthood - I have asked the Attorney General to appoint an Independent Counsel to investigate Planned Parenthood as the current AG has already demonstrated bias by signing on to a Supreme Court brief (2007) supporting Planned Parenthood and is not in my view capable of impartiality. This will remain a priority for me as the Congress considers funding legislation in the coming weeks. Sending hard-earned taxpayer money to this organization is indefensible. It is an honor for me to serve you in the Congress. I welcome your view on these and other issues. Sincerely,
