Dear Friend,

Hurricane Laura made landfall as a Category 5 hurricane earlier this week with winds reaching 150-plus miles per hour. Initially, the storm was predicted to hit our 36th Congressional District directly, but in the last moments shifted to the East. While there are widespread reports of damage across Southeast Texas, Orange and Newton Counties and the western part of Louisiana took the brunt of the storm. This week’s special edition newsletter intends to update you on the actions I have taken as your Congressman in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Laura.

On Thursday, I met with Governor Abbott, Senator Cruz, Senator Cornyn, and numerous other elected officials as well as senior representatives from FEMA, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to discuss Hurricane Laura response efforts and the “Ike Dike” or the coastal storm surge mitigation project to help avoid flooding and prevent major hurricane damage in the future. I will continue to work with the Governor, my colleagues in Congress, and state and local officials to ensure that impacted TX-36 counties and residents have the resources necessary for a speedy recovery.

While in Orange on Thursday, I had an opportunity to speak with and thank several first responders and emergency management personnel. We sincerely appreciate your selfless service!

Early Friday morning, I went on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal to provide an update on the aftermath of Hurricane Laura as well as what the road to recovery looks like for Southeast Texans in the days ahead. Take a moment to watch by clicking below!

I was able to join the U.S. Coast Guard on a flyover on Friday afternoon to survey the destruction left by Hurricane Laura in Orange County as well as Cameron, Holly Beach, and Lake Charles, Louisiana.

President Trump visited Orange yesterday to view the aftermath of Hurricane Laura firsthand. I met with the President to discuss at length what steps the Administration needs to take in order to help restore the community and aid Southeast Texans as they repair and rebuild their homes and businesses.

I’m so grateful to have a Commander in Chief who continues to prioritize Texas and cares so much about the well-being of the American people.

Unfortunately, Southeast Texans are veterans at fighting through the recovery from major storms. This isn’t our first rodeo – by working together, we will get through this difficult time. My staff and I will do everything we possibly can to assist those impacted. Please reach out to us!

Let the recovery process begin.

Sincerely,
Rep. Brian Babin
